Pardon the TURKEY

Before Thanksgiving Break we had a Mission to Save the President's Turkey!!!
In order to Pardon the Turkey we needed to BREAK the codes!

Students were given 6 locks - or challenges that they had to solve. When they solved the problem a code was given to use for the locks.  Students had to work together to decipher the clues. If they were not able to figure out the clues they had 2 hint cards they could use.

It was a fun activity and a great way to kick of Thanksgiving Break! Thank you to Mr. Chaltray for welcoming us into the Creation Station and setting up such FUN - collaborative- problem solving activities.

HOUR of CODE

Today we had our HOUR of CODE with Mr. Chaltray. As with past years we reviewed coding, how it is used and why it is important. He also highlighted what activities will be at the Coder Express next week and if attending the outline for the night.

Today we were introduced to a more "advanced" coding program called Swift Playgrounds- this is an Apple App- and can only be used on Apple platforms. Even though the program was running slowly the students enjoyed it and may want to check it out again at home.

Reminder that the Coder Express is next week 6:30-7:30 for 4th graders.

BOOK bags

This week we turned in our BOOK bag project. For the book bag project we had to...
1. Read a chapter book- or do it about one you have already read
2. Put 6 objects in the bag (at least 3 handmade) and they had to be important to the story
3. Draw one of the main characters on the back and describe that person
4. Write the problem and solution on the back
5. And last, but not least, bring it in to Mrs. Bucci!

Book Bag Project

This month we did our first BOOK project. I did mine on Matilda. You had a paper bag and you had to read the book and make three things and get three things like pictures. I made my three things out of clay. On the bag you write the setting, the problem, solution and characters.  You were to draw pictures on the front.  I want to do this again! IT was fun!

First Snow

This week it snowed for the first time this year. Everybody got out of their seats and looked out the window. "It's snowing!" we all screamed. When I got home after soccer I went sledding down our driveway. It was full of ice. Then we had to go in for dinner. After dinner my mom, big brother and I went outside. We made snow angels and other stuff.

Spooky Substitute Teacher Yesterday!

There was a guest substitute teacher yesterday Ms. Iccub. She welcomed the class with some spooky activities and fun. The day began with Spooky readings on Epic and a special few rounds of Multiplication Bingo before they were off to Gym. After watching Billy Nye the Skeletal System during snack the students were invited to different Spooky Math centers to play games with their classmates. Indoor recess was a treat with the new games donated by parents and of course coding and creating on the ipads. A mystery science lesson - What would happen if you didn't have a skull? reviewed what we learned from Bill Nye and the class all turning in to skeletons as you see above. It was a very enjoyable October 31st for all the children in A123. Hope you all had a Happy Halloween!

The New Playground

This week we got to play on the new playground. It was very cool and very fun to play on.  If you want to play football or soccer they will blow a whistle after five minutes and take the people who want to play soccer or football to the courtyard.  I played football in the courtyard for the first few days. Then I played tag.  One day it was fun when I hid in a tunnel with other people that were playing.

Our new Playground!

New Playground-

This week we went on our new playground. It is super cool! Our big kid playground is really fun with a super fast slide and a twisty slide. There is a really cool tunnel thats under a bridge. We got a brand new soccer and football field.  There is this pole that you can climb up. There is a ping-pong TABLE!!!! There is also a fresh 4 square court.  The gaga pit was moved. There are new swings.  There is a super fast slide into a sand pit.  I think this is the best playground ever!

Feeling GOOD!

This week we read some FEEL good books! They represent people feeling bad about themselves and being treated badly.  The books explain about being nice to people- no matter what they look like, what they like to do, or the color of their skin. You should respect everyone.  I think that was a very important lesson because it teaches kids about being kind in school or out!

US Traditional MATH

This week in Math we learned US Traditional Addition. I already knew it but did not know it was called US Traditional Addition.  We watched a funny video where the person making the video was using base ten blocks. It was funny when he accidentally made the base ten blocks blurry! This week was super- duper cool!

FC

Math

This week I learned about MATH.  We learned about US Traditional Addition and Partial Sums Addition.  We also did a Muffin Math- Crack the Code lesson. We worked as a team to Crack the Code. We also worked in our Math Journals.  I like math!

ECOLOGY

This week we learned about ECOLOGY. There are producers which are plants- like milkweed, oak trees, and grass. Then there are consumers which are like caterpillars and herbivores.  Then last there are decomposers which are the fungi and other bugs that make soil.  I really liked ECOLOGY this week.  This weeks learning log was really fun.

GM

RDK Raffles

This week we had two raffles.  The kids who won were R and A.  R got an eraser in the shape of a pink dog. A got a light up ring.  When I didn't win I was a little sad. But, I was happen for R when she one. The day before she got braces.  So I am happy she won because she deserved it.  The RDK= Responsible Dependable Kid Raffles were so much fun!

LK

Ecology

This week I learned about ECOLOGY.  One thing I learned about was producers, consumers and decomposers.  A producer is like a plant or flower that has gotten energy from the sun.  A consumer is something that eats the plant so it passes on the energy.  Like a mouse eats a seed, then a snake eats the mouse, then an owl eats the snake, then the owl dies and decomposes and small bugs and mushrooms break it down.  Like maggots, fungi, ants, worms and beetles.  We learned a lot this week. But I think this was the best thing we learned this week!

OR

Mrs. Bucci's Read Alouds

This week we learned about friendship and kindness. We have read The Bad Seed, Wonder, and The Invisible Boy.  It showed us that we are learners in different ways and to always choose KINDNESS. We do read alouds at snack time. We read one book a day.  We only have two books left Don't Laugh at Me and Red.

Erosion, weathering, deposition

Weathering, Deposition and Erosion is extraordinary!
This week we learned about weathering, deposition and erosion.  Weathering is like a hammer to break rocks and other things. Erosion sweeps things away.  Deposition is something that deposits.  I think weathering, deposition and erosion are cool.

Opinion Writing

This week we started opinion writing.  Opinion Writing is writing about something you care about or want.  For example, last year I wrote about how I wanted a kitten and this year I got a kitten. So for this year I just wrote about my friend named Brody.  I started off with Boxes and Bullets.  Boxes and Bullets are a framework you use for opinion writing.  Opinion writing is really fun. I hope you can write and opinion essay someday.

Guidance is FUN!

In Guidance we talked about kindness. We talked about how kindness makes you feel.  It makes you and the person you are doing the kind thing to feel good. Kindness is like a boomerang sometimes.  We watched a video- it started with a kid falling off his skateboard- a man helped the kid get up- that inspired the kid to do something nice! He helped a woman carry her bags across the street.  Then the woman did something nice and people kept doing kind stuff until it went back to the man who helped the kid.  After that we played a kindness Jeopardy game. It was fun.

Ice Skating

Last weekend I went iceskating at Great Pond. The ice was so smooth- like a smoothy! I went with my neighbors. It was so much fun. We played ice tag. I fell a couple of times. My neighbor made a penguin slide. Then I fell again.  It hurt. I got a bruise but I got back up again. I love iceskating!

Hearts and Hands

Yesterday we made an art project. We first traced our hand and arm. We glued the tracings on a paper. It was a tree. Then we made three dimensional hearts as leaves. They looked very pretty. I think I will give it to my parents on Valentine's Day. I think they will like it!

Snow Days

This week we had a snow day. My friend and I played in the snow with his dog Wriggly. Wriggly is a puppy so he is fast.  Our favorite game to play is dog chase. We chase the dog up and down the hills. Sometimes we even play catch.  While Wriggly runs we take the sleds and lay on them.  One had a rope and the dog pulled me for no reason.  That's one of the fun parts of snow days!

School is Fun!

Why is school fun?
It is fun because you get to have a playdate with more than 100 kids.
You are alone with your friends and teachers.
We get to learn.
That is why I think school is fun!

Social Studies

This week we learned about Maine and the first people that came to Maine. The first people that came to Maine were the Paleo Indians 10,500 years ago. Then were the Red Paint People 4-5000 years ago. They put red powder in their graves. That is why they are called the Red Paint People. Next were the Oyster People. They left the middens of the oysters in piles. It was really fun I like Social Studies.

Snow Day

This week I learned about how days can go on snow days. As soon as I woke up I literally started fooling around with my action figure.  Then at 12:00 pm I played my PS4. I got bored because I was not at school.  Then I went and watched TV. I was not having fun at all. But I got through the day. I did not know that snow days could be boring.
