Basket Making- with PCPA Grant- and Towanda

All fourth graders will be making baskets this year with the funds from a PCPA Visiting Artist Grant. Students spent an entire day learning about the traditions of Native American basket making and how baskets are made today. Towanda, now in her 8th year residency here at Pond Cove, travels by ferry from Long Island to join us for this very special art event. Please ask your son/daughter about this very memorable day.

Pardon the TURKEY

Before Thanksgiving Break we had a Mission to Save the President's Turkey!!!
In order to Pardon the Turkey we needed to BREAK the codes!

Students were given 6 locks - or challenges that they had to solve. When they solved the problem a code was given to use for the locks.  Students had to work together to decipher the clues. If they were not able to figure out the clues they had 2 hint cards they could use.

It was a fun activity and a great way to kick of Thanksgiving Break! Thank you to Mr. Chaltray for welcoming us into the Creation Station and setting up such FUN - collaborative- problem solving activities.

HOUR of CODE

Today we had our HOUR of CODE with Mr. Chaltray. As with past years we reviewed coding, how it is used and why it is important. He also highlighted what activities will be at the Coder Express next week and if attending the outline for the night.

Today we were introduced to a more "advanced" coding program called Swift Playgrounds- this is an Apple App- and can only be used on Apple platforms. Even though the program was running slowly the students enjoyed it and may want to check it out again at home.

Reminder that the Coder Express is next week 6:30-7:30 for 4th graders.

BOOK bags

This week we turned in our BOOK bag project. For the book bag project we had to...
1. Read a chapter book- or do it about one you have already read
2. Put 6 objects in the bag (at least 3 handmade) and they had to be important to the story
3. Draw one of the main characters on the back and describe that person
4. Write the problem and solution on the back
5. And last, but not least, bring it in to Mrs. Bucci!

Book Bag Project

This month we did our first BOOK project. I did mine on Matilda. You had a paper bag and you had to read the book and make three things and get three things like pictures. I made my three things out of clay. On the bag you write the setting, the problem, solution and characters.  You were to draw pictures on the front.  I want to do this again! IT was fun!
